" When I rushed him to the clinic, I was terrified and never gave the plan a thought. Later that evening, I remembered the plan and was so happy I had enrolled. You just never know what's going to happen. "

- Pat C.

Answers:

Who is eligible for the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan?

Policies are available to US residents, for dogs 8 weeks and older, and for cats 10 weeks and older. Pets can be enrolled in four plans that include illness coverage if they are under 9 years of age. Once enrolled, coverage can renew regardless of age. The Accident Plus Plan is available for pets of any age and is good as a new policy if the pet is already 9 or older. Issuance of coverage is subject to underwriting guidelines.

Does my pet have to be purebred and/or registered?

No - the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan is available to all dogs and cats that meet the underwriting guidelines. We cover pets that are pure breeds, mixed breeds, registered and unregistered.

Who Underwrites the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan?

The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan is underwritten by Markel Insurance Company, rated A ‘Excellent’ by A.M. Best Company.

Can I use my current veterinarian?

Yes - you can take your pet to any licensed veterinarian in the United States or Canada.

What is covered?

The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan provides benefits for veterinary services for covered services including surgery, hospitalization, diagnostic and laboratory tests, X-Rays, CT scans, MRIs and prescription medications. We offer four plans for both Accidents and Illnesses at different levels of protection. In addition we have a low-cost plan called Accident Plus that covers specific accidents and injuries and is open to pets of any age.

The Wellness Plans add additional coverage for preventive treatments such as vaccinations and boosters, annual physical exam, heartworm testing, annual de-worming, heartworm prevention, flea and tick control and annual dental cleaning.

The Wellness Plus Plan offers extra benefits for spay/neuter, vaccine titers in place of vaccinations, and for Boarding Fees if the owner is unexpectedly hospitalized for more than 48 hours and there is no-one at home to take care of your pet.

For a summary of benefit levels, please see our Quick Guide.

For full details, please see our Policies Terms & Conditions.

What is not covered?

No insurance policy will be able to cover everything, so we hope you will read your terms and conditions closely. Generally, the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan does not cover the following:

When do my benefits start?

Coverage for accidents, injuries and preventive coverage (if included in your selected plan) starts on Day 1. Illness coverage, where applicable on a new plan, begins 30 days after your effective date.

Is there a Deductible or any Co-Insurance?

Yes - the deductible amount and frequency, together with the co-insurance amounts are listed on the Benefits Summary by policy. Once you have met the deductible, the Plan pays the co-insurance percentage of allowable charges up to the incident maximum payable amounts.

Do you cover vaccinations?

Yes - Preventive care such as vaccinations and boosters, an annual physical exam, flea/tick control, dental cleaning etc. is covered under the Wellness Plan or Wellness Plus Plan. Please see our Benefits Summary for more information.

Do you cover spaying or neutering?

Yes - the Wellness Plus Plan provides coverage for a spay or neuter.

How do I file a claim and get reimbursed?

It is simple. Pay for the visit at the time you receive services. Take a Claim Form to the Veterinarian's office and have your Veterinarian fill out Section 2 of the Claim Form. You fill out the rest of the form and send it to us along with a copy of the itemized invoice. You can send it by email, mail or fax.

We process claims within 15 days of receipt of all necessary documents. The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan reimburses you directly for claims.

Will my insurance be cancelled as my pet ages?

No - we want to protect your pet through a long and happy life.

What is a waiting period?

There is a waiting period for the first 30 days of coverage during which we will not cover any disease or illness for your pet. This waiting period, however, does not apply to unforeseen injury or accidents occurring during this period. If continuous coverage is maintained, the waiting period will be waived for renewals.
